Gaborone City Mayor, Austin Abraham was early this week unveiled as the official patron for the Glitz Awards of Bw Celebs at GICC.
This appointment came just a few days before the actual day of the awards tomorrow ( Saturday). The Glitz Awards of BW Celebs exists to encourage the creatives and arts space as well as recognize local celebrities. Director of these awards, Nkgopolang Tlhomelang is of the view that there is so much talent in Botswana and local celebrities deserve international features. This is why this platform of honoring local celebrities was developed in the first place, he shared. The mayor said he couldn’t have had it any other way besides accepting the position. He highlighted that the industry needs collaborative efforts in order to grow and he is happy to be part of the awards that targets growth and recognition. He is also in agreement that Botswana celebrities could sell the country better out there. He assured the Glitz Awards team that he will do anything to make sure that the Awards grow even beyond borders. He said that he will ensure that there is government support not only on the Glitz Awards but the entire creatives industry at large. He said this could help the growth of tourism in the city.
The lineup of artistes at this lovely event to be held this Saturday include both local and international artistes. It would be headlined by Ntate Stunna ( SA), Killorbeez Beatz ( SA), Zama Radebe ( SA), Rethabile Khumalo ( SA) and local stars: HanC, Mapetla, Rosey Shade DJs, DJ Lyf, Fifi Afrika, Shosha Nguve, Skelem Key Fam, Isiqhwa Traditional Group and Kunkuru wee.
Tlhomelang said that they have deliberately engaged international acts as a way of trying to motivate local musicians and even forge collaborations with these artistes as Glitz awards is more focused on taking local talent to the next level.
Sponsors for this long awaited event were also unveiled. Glitz Awards would this year collaborate with sponsors such as Choppies, Fidelity Print Mark, Clicks, Suits Afrika, Fifi Afrika, DBS, BTV, RB2, and B4U Discount Centre.
Winning nominees would walk away with a trophy and some incentives. Tlhomelang noted that the idea is to introduce bigger prizes in the future as they attract more sponsors. The Glitz Awards team takes pride in the fact that they have grown better than last year. Chairman of Glitz Awards of BW Celebs, Dickson Gothaang is pleased to share that, this year’s awards have gained momentum. “We are happy that people are showing interest and the tickets to the event have been selling well, showing that people are fully aware of our initiative to shape our local celebrities and give them recognition,” he said.
