The government is developing a disability legislation to enforce the principles of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which Botswana acceded to in August 2021.

Director of National Disability Coordinating Office in the Ministry for State President, Peggy Garebaitse underscored that the Bill has been gazetted and will soon be presented in Parliament. Garebaitse commended the Botswana Red Cross Society for its longstanding commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities since the initiation of the Tlamelong initiative in 1974.

The Director was speaking at the graduation of 29 students living with disabilities at Tlamelong Rehabilitation Centre. Garebaitse commended the graduates for their achievements, encouraging them to apply the acquired skills in launching projects that enhance their socio-economic status. She also urged them to take advantage of government services, programmes, and affirmative action opportunities designed for individuals with disabilities.

Garebaitse extended appreciation to caregivers, family members, and instructors for their crucial roles in supporting and encouraging individuals with disabilities throughout their journey to success.

She acknowledged the rare qualities required to care for or teach individuals with disabilities, emphasising the instrumental role these supporters play in nurturing and empowering remarkable individuals. She also called for collective efforts to build a society where everyone is valued and has the opportunity to reach their full potential, aligning with the vision of President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi’s “A re chencheng” initiative—a paradigm shift promoting the belief that all individuals are capable of achieving their goals.

The graduates - 17 females and 12 males - received their well-deserved Trade C practical certificates from MTTC, well equipped with the knowledge and skills acquired through dedication and commitment over the past two years.

The ceremony also marked the distribution of starter packs tailored to their respective fields, ensuring a smooth transition into the job market or the initiation of entrepreneurial ventures in their communities.
