Jwaneng Galaxy’s forward, Thabang Sesinyi says he was pushed all the way after finishing as the joint 2022/2023 Botswana Premier League (BPL) top goal scorer. Sesinyi became the first player in the BPL era to win the award on two consecutive occasions as he finished on par with Orapa United’s Omaatla Kebatho with 23 goals each. ‘Gaucho’ in an interview with Sport Monitor said he faced stiff competition throughout the season and credited the local league’s marksmen.

“I think most of the attacking players throughout the teams in the league have been hampered by injuries. That has often killed their momentum going forward and in trying to achieve their personal goals. I would say we have a great pool of attacking players in the country,” Sesinyi said. On the last day, Sesinyi scored a brace as Galaxy ran out 2-1 victors over Eleven Angels.

The Jwaneng Galaxy goal poacher has contributed to just under 35% of the team’s goals in the league race. This is the highest of any player in the just ended season. Sesinyi, however, said it was not an easy task to defend the golden boot title as he credited his hard work. “I am proud of myself and I am proud of my teammates. We had a very wonderful season and being able to defend the top scorer title is an honour. It shows the commitment, the hard work I have been putting behind the scenes and I am very grateful,” he said.

Sesinyi is said to be on the radar of a number of clubs from abroad with a move imminent. The forward admitted to being on high pursuit but remained coy on details.

“Nothing is certain at the moment but we will see. Yes, there are clubs that have shown interest but at the moment I cannot say anything,” he said.

Sesinyi nearly left the local league for Asian football but the move fell through as the striker did not meet certain requirements.

The nimble footed forward had stints across the boarders with the now defunct, Platinum Stars. Sesinyi and Kebatho’s 23 goal tally remains off the mark from dethroning former Township Rollers’ marksman, Terence Mandaza. Mandaza’s 31 goals more than a decade ago remains the all time record.
