Batswana were engulfed in grief over the weekend following the heartbreaking news of the passing on of Precious Masego Masisi, affectionately known as Mma Tshelang. The nation is mourning the loss of the First Mother, who played a pivotal role in the lives of influential individuals involved in the development of Botswana.

According to a statement by Minister for State President Kabo Morwaeng, Mma Tshelang peacefully passed away on Friday night in Gaborone at the age of 95. Funeral arrangements are currently being discussed by the family and the nation will be informed in due course.

Although she lived a life out of the limelight, Mma Tshelang was the steadfast support behind several men who made significant contributions to Botswana. She was the beloved wife of former Moshupa legislator, Edison Masisi, a respected Cabinet member for many years. Furthermore, she was the mother of Tshelang Masisi, the former Francistown West legislator and most notably, the mother of the incumbent President

Mokgweetsi Masisi. The bond between President Masisi and his mother has been evident throughout his political career, eliciting affection and admiration from the nation. In a remarkable display of devotion, Mma Tshelang, then 90-yearsold, braved inclement weather in 2018 to attend her son’s inauguration. President Masisi expressed his gratitude and paid tribute to his mother during his speech, saying: “I also pay special respect to my 90-year-old mother who is here present. I am proud to be the first president to be sworn in with your mother present to witness such.”

The crowd responded with resounding applause, appreciating the profound bond between mother and son. President Masisi concluded with heartfelt words, “I love you, Mother.”

Demonstrating her unwavering support for her child, Mma Tshelang ensured that her vote would be counted amongst those that propelled her son to the State House. At 91-years-old, she participated in the October 2019 General Election, casting her vote that ultimately led to her son’s election as President. President Masisi consistently expressed his affection for his mother, just as he does for his wife, Neo Jane Masisi.

While limited information has been documented about Mma Tshelang, President Masisi revealed in an interview that his mother hailed from Taung, South Africa.

He spoke highly of his parents, commending them for instilling values of self-reliance and discipline in their children. President Masisi also shared that Mma Tshelang had eight children, further exemplifying her commitment to family.
