Lesedi Mkhutshwa

FRANCISTOWN: Selebi-Phikwe police are continuing their search for the mother of the newborn baby boy who was found dead in a red plastic bag near Sam Sono Stadium.

According to the Selebi-Phikwe police station commander, Nicholas Kadiatla, they are yet to find the mother or relatives of the baby boy whose remains were abandoned near the stadium. Kadiatla said the baby was found by a passer-by on November 30 in Selebi-Phikwe

township. “The passerby saw the mysterious bag in the morning while going to work. The passerby got curious about the red plastic bag and opened the bag only to find a motionless baby boy. The passerby then reported the matter to the police,” he added. He said the baby boy was just wrapped in a huge red unlabelled plastic bag. Kadiatla further stated that according to the condition of the baby he was just a few hours old.

He said they suspect the baby might have been delivered at home and then dumped at the stadium. “We are still yet to find out if the baby was delivered alive or dead. There is a possibility that he was dumped alive and suffocated to death or he was killed before being dumped,” he added.

The Selebi-Phikwe station commander said they are still awaiting post-mortem to determine the cause of death. In the meantime, he pleaded with the community to help them identify the mother or family of the dead baby. He said that members of the community should come forward if they know of any expectant mother who has lost her child mysteriously as it could be helpful
