FRANCISTOWN: Police in Selebi-Phikwe are investigating an incident in which a 54-year-old man allegedly took his own life at his home. Selebi-Phikwe Police Station commander, Nicholas Kadiatla said the old man allegedly committed suicide at Manga ward last week. He said the man was found hanging from the roof of his house by his sister. “The old man was staying alone. His sister went to the deceased’s house to check up on him and to her surprise she found his body hanging motionless,” he added. Kadiatla said the body of the deceased person was taken to Selebi-Phikwe hospital for post-mortem.

He said they are still awaiting results which will establish the cause of the man’s death.

The gruesome incident comes as a shock showing a growing trend of elderly people taking their own lives. Early last month, police in Tshesebe received a report about an incident in which a 60-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself with a headscarf. Mid this year, there were reports of a 70-year-old woman who committed suicide at Senyawe village which is also a part of the Tshesebe policing area.
