BOPEU CEC underway in Palapye

Mompati Tlhankane

ABOPEU CEC meeting is currently underway in Palapye and will go on until December 7 under the theme ‘Building The 21st Century Labour Movement Through Decent Work And Effective Workplace Structures’.

The Central Executive Committee (CEC) meets to consider annual reports from the national executive committee, audited financial reports that will show the financial position of the union, the Board of Trustees report, consideration of the annual budget, and any other report.

Speaking to the media recently, Botswana Public Employees Union (BOPEU) president, Masego Mogwera said the theme speaks to building effective workplace structures and mechanisms that protect workers’ rights and enable them to bargain collectively for better wages and working conditions. “We recognise that this year’s CEC will be held within the 16 Days Of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) which is a period between November 25 and December 12. We also recognise that more than 50% of BOPEU members are women who are mostly the victims of GBV.

Therefore, the CEC will hold a match against GBV on Dec 5 in the afternoon. The official opening will be conducted on December 6, while the official closing date will be December 8,” she said. Mogwera said they expect about 400 delegates in accordance with their constitution.

She indicated that the CEC is an annual event and therefore the programme of the day is fairly standard as it is a constitutional imperative for the CEC to convene annually.

The BOPEU president pointed out that there will also be awards given to deserving ordinary members, shop stewards, and former leaders of the union who have contributed immensely to the achievements and development of the union over the years. “The CEC gives the union an opportunity to reflect on the achievement and challenges that are inherent in the labour market with the view to map a way forward,” Mogwera said.
