Thirty-five people have been charged for drinking alcohol in undesignated areas in Selebi-Phikwe. This followed an operation by the Selebi-Phikwe Police Station that was conducted over the weekend.

Selebi-Phikwe Police Station Commander, Nicholas Kadiatla told The Monitor that all of the suspects were fined amounts ranging from P200 to P500 as admission of guilt after they were caught red-handed drinking alcohol in public.

Kadiatla said the majority of drinkers have the habit of sitting at entertainment places and drinking alcohol opting not to go inside the premises where alcohol consumption is allowed.

“Between Friday and Saturday, we charged 24 people with the majority of them caught drinking alcohol metres away from the bar by the parking outside the club and 11 people were charged between Saturday and Sunday.

A bar owner in Selebi-Phikwe was also charged and fined P1,000 for operating a bar beyond stipulated hours after the bar was found still open at around 2am,” he said. He said they have observed that there is too much excitement amongst many people as the festive season swiftly approaches and implored Batswana to take it slow.

“This is a time when a lot happens. People are highly likely to find themselves on the wrong side of the law because of too much excitement hence I am pleading with members of the public to be cautious at all times,” Kadiatla said.
