Let’s be comfortable talking about death

Dying is a natural process that unites us all. I personally believe that there is more to death than we want to believe and accept. It cannot just be the end when you give up the ghost. I believe there is life beyond the grave, either life of eternal joy and peace in heaven, or eternal sorrow and pain in hell, well, that’s a whole topic for another day.

Death has become such a common occurrence that nowadays; a week does not go by without news of the demise of someone you know. We can therefore never avoid the topic. In fact, we should normalize talking about it so that we make the right decisions while we still have an opportunity to.

Decisions especially about how we wish for things to be done upon our death, who to take care of our children, the division of our estates, among many other things. Perhaps the greatest fear of death emanates from the fact that we know deep down that we are not ready. If we were, we would welcome it and deal with it face on. Of course our level of preparation can never take away the pain of losing a loved one.

What makes death more painful is the fact that we often choose to ignore talking about it, until we have to talk about it. We are such cowards!

It would be helpful to look at death in a different way so that we are able to know how to deal with it effectively should it come knocking on our doors. Would it not be good if whenever you think of death, you are not afraid, but instead you are motivated to make your life healthier and more enjoyable in the long run.

If we thought about death more, we would reduce bad habits like smoking and increase intentions to eat more healthier. We would ensure that we do the necessary health checks and be in our greatest health state.

I believe you would also be happier knowing that you have maximised on the time that you have been given to live. You will ensure that you spend more time with family and let them know that you love them. Make the best of family time. This will also provide an opportunity for you to pursue peace with all people, knowing that at anytime you can meet your maker.

Thinking about death, might also be a good stimulator and motivator to achieving your personal goals.

We would be more intentional in ensuring that we focus on fulfilling our God given purposes before the dreaded day comes. So that when it does, we can peacefully go, having fulfilled all that we knew we were here for.

When we give thought to death more, we may realise that there are certain things that we waste time on. Think about death often and make the best out of the life you still have.
