IEC meets political parties over weekend by-elections

• Bosele, Grootlaagte by-elections attract nine candidates

The Independent Electoral Commission is fully prepared for the Bosele and Grootlagte Polling District by-elections that will take place this weekend.

Spokesperson of the IEC Oscar Maroba said that the IEC is ready to hold elections that will run without any challenges.

He noted that since these are just by-elections, they do not need a lot of logistics in terms of preparations. Furthermore, Maroba revealed that the Executive Secretary of the IEC met with party officials this week to ensure that they have elections that will be incident free.

He noted that in that meeting, IEC ensured that they explain the law to the party officials and fully lay out what the law allows election officials to do and not do. Maroba said that the polling staff has been fully trained and everything that is required for the by-elections is in place. He further indicated that they do not expect any legal tussles after the elections as everyone has been fully briefed about what will transpire on the day.

The Bosele ward vacancy was occasioned by the passing on of Councilor Ms Thabanyane Mmualefe on New Year’s day and that of Grootlaagte ward by the demise of Councilor Mr Ezekiel Kajuu on January 12. Voters in Bosele ward, Gaborone Bonnington North, will choose between Kaelo Kgomotso of Botswana Congress Party (BCP); Mpule Maplanka of Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC); Sesupo Helen Olebile of Botswana Labour Party (BLP), Isaac Moseki of Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and one independent candidate. Grootlaagte ward voters in the Ghanzi North constituency will choose between Sehakgamaleng Tjitemisa of UDC, Petro Moretlwa of BDP, Kopanelo Theko of BMD, and Independent Candidate Jacob Malesele.
