Sylike taps into medical equipment industry

BY POTLAKO BOGATSU

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, African countries struggled to get a lot of products such as food, medicines and medical equipment.

What was a crises to many became a business opportunity to others. Sylike Medicals became the first virus collection and transportation tube company owned by Batswana youth.

According to the spokesperson of Sylike Medicals, Segolame Golwelwang, Sylike Medicals also manufacture Covid-19 PCR test kits, including the nasal swabs. Golwelwang explains that the company opened shop in 2021 and is situated at the LEA incubation center in Gaborone.

Golwelwang explains that their products are created in a clean room and they are ISO 13485: 2016 certified. This certification is issued as the standard for a Quality Management System (“QMS”) for the design and manufacture of Medical Devices. Golwelwang states that their target market is hospitals, laboratories and universities.

She notes that the vision of the company is to become the main manufacturer of their medical products in SADC. A feat which is not far from happening as they are already exporting to Malawi and Zimbabwe.
