LARONA MAKHAIZA Correspondent

While the comedy industry in Botswana is shunned by many, upcoming comedian Oboile Onalenna who identifies himself as ‘Wassa The Comedian’, does not share the same sentiments. His passion has driven him to believe the industry could become as fruitful as any other.

‘Wassa The Comedian’ acknowledges that the comedy industry is currently like an orphaned child, which makes it difficult for them to succeed.

Despite it being a tough terrain to walk on, the youngster believes he is up for the challenge and ready to make a name for himself.

“In these present times, I do realise and acknowledge that it is hard to live from comedy alone but my passion and the drive for comedy will keep me going,” ‘Wassa The Comedian’ said.

Furthermore, the 20-year-old said when he started comedy, his journey was not all rosés as he had expected it to turn out to be. “I started comedy back in school, I could crack jokes with my classmates who seemed to enjoy them. I made them laugh and that led to one of my classmates opening a the page was a serious drawback for his brand, he did not allow that to derail him from following his passion for comedy.

With a new Facebook page, the newbie believes he is back on the right path with his career now taking shape.

“I have always battled for traction with my comedy but of late people are really taking interest in my comedy and I’m gaining that traction I have always yearned for and I hope the numbers will continue rising,” he said.

His recent rise in comedy saw Wassa The Comedian collaborating with one of the heavyweights in the comedy industry ‘Troy April’.

He has also collaborated with another young comedian called ‘Zeze The Comedian’ who is also still finding his feet in the game.

“I am really happy to have worked with Troy April recently, he motivated greatly about comedy and life. With Zeze also, I am also happy about him cause he is the one who approached me so that we do get to collaborate in one of our videos together with Troy,” Wassa said.

He said although it is still not so profitable, he does not intend to lose focus. “I am just a 20-year-old who did not do well at school so I have comedy, which is the only thing currently that I’m sustaining myself with in the meantime though it is not profitable,” he said.
