Gaborone United’s (GU) favourite, Obonwe Maome could leave the club after 12 years of service, Mmegi Sport has learnt. ‘Too Longer’ joined the Money Machine from the development structures as a teenager and is on the verge of ending his more than a decade-long stay as his contract has come to an end.

The midfielder has seen his stature in the team diminish while his progress was hampered by injuries this season. Maome was restricted to a squad member role throughout this season and has reportedly been deemed surplus to requirements, but talks are ongoing on his future. The 29-year-old has a league title, two Orange FA Cups and two Mascom Top 8 honours during his tenure with the Money Machine. He led the assist rankings with 19 as GU won their first league championship in 13 years in the 2021– 2022 season.

Maome could lead a mass player exodus as GU is said to be undergoing massive reconstruction ahead of the next season. Four more players could join Maome in the GU ‘unwanted’ list. Former club vice-captain, Lesego Galenamotlhale is on his way out after three years with the club. ‘Big Lesh’ joined the Reds from Extension Gunners in 2020 and enjoyed a fruitful spell as he won three titles with the club.

Kenyan forward, John Mark Makwata will have his contract terminated after just a year with the Reds. Makwata has never claimed his stake in the GU line-up and he is leaving the club just a year into his two-year deal. Forward, Tshepo Malgas is also heading for the exit door while this publication has been informed that some youthful talents might leave either on permanent moves or loans.

The club has meanwhile opened talks with industrious midfielder, Mothusi Cooper. He had his oneyear contract with the club expiring May 31 and information reaching this publication is that the two parties are in talks while the player has also attracted interest from abroad.

“Maome, Lesh, and Malgas’ contracts have come to an end while Makwata is left with a season but the club is letting them go.

They will be given release letters before the end of this week. As for Cooper, they have been in negotiations since before the (Orange FA Cup) semi-final; he is likely to stay,” the source said. Sua Flamingoes are also reportedly interested in landing Cooper.
