THE OFFICE OF THE OMBUDSMAN BUSINESS BOTSWANA TRADE FAIR’S REPORT

The Office of the Ombudsman recently showcased its services at the just ended business Botswana Trade Fair. In an interview with Mmegi the entity’s Senior Legal Investigator Ms. Katlego Lekau said that the organisation used its participation at the fair to enhance public awareness about its services.

She pointed out that the Office of the Ombudsman exists to promote Administrative Justice in the Public Sector and ensuring that Best Administrative Practices are implemented without fail.

As an oversight institution, the Ombudsman is governed by the Ombudsman Act as enacted in 1995.

The act gives the institution powers to monitor the exercise of public power and ensure that Administrative decisions are made reasonably, fairly, lawfully and are not prejudicial to members of the public. The Ombudsman provides checks and balances within the whole system of the government and parastatals to enhance good governance.

This year’s event themed “Promoting Economic Growth through industrialization” “It is when we are sure as a country that good governance prevails that we can now leverage on promoting economic growth through industrialization, “she said.

Ms. Lekau elucidated that the theme does not only talk about citizen empowerment, but also puts a strong emphasis on attracting foreign investors into the country. For this reason, as the Ombudsman it is important to constantly participate in the evaluation of existing laws as well as policies, working with various stake holders with a view of insuring good public administration and government’s ambition of promoting good governance.

For example, where members of the public approach government departments to seek assistance in providing business or formalizing their industries and they suffer delays, wrong application of laws, discrimination, poor work ethics and non-adherence to public service standards, our offices are always open to receive reports of such acts so that the Ombudsman investigates and recommends corrective action free of charge.
