Looks are everything for every human being especially for women. Wearing makeup has become the in-thing for many women the world over. The face is the mirror of every individual because it is the first thing a person notices before seeing the whole body and appreciating its owner.

However, beauticians are there to help boost people’s confidence and sense of personal accomplishment with the magic they do in them being either by way of facial make up or hair do. For instance, Pearl Kgaudi also known as Dr P, born and raised in Francistown, is one of the talented local beauticians who has dedicated her time to making people gorgeous with the use of cosmetics.

This 34-year-old owns a popular salon called Pearl’s Beauty Salon at Letlhakane where she has continued to bring a smile on many of her clients’ faces. Kgaudi’s big break came after doing make-up on some of renowned music queens like Charma Gal and SA queen Makhadzi. Her works cannot go unnoticed being either make up, hair installations more especially on men’s baldheads and making them looking young and fresh.

“I do occasions make-ups such as weddings and parties. I was inspired by the love of beautifying fellow women like me and I also have being passionate about being a business woman so I decided to put all my passions in one and opened a salon. Apart from make-up, I also do hair dressing specialising in ladies hair cut styles such as bobcut, ladies cut, artificial installation in bald head and wig installations,” she said.

However, Kgaudi pointed out that in the beginning her business targeted women of all economic statuses but currently focuses more on bridal and bridesmaids make up, event make up, celebrity make up, ladies haircuts and men’s bald hair installations so in that sense that is my target market. She further explained that she noticed that events were bringing the most business in

her make-up section. This self-taught beautician said she learned everything she knows today through her salon clients, YouTube, practice, trial and errors. She also pointed out that Batswana have been very supportive of her business. She said she always got positive feedback and new clients because people were happy with her work. However, she said she markets her business through different social media platforms that helps her a lot because that was where most

of her marketing was. “My favourite make-up was for Charmagal during the Kgosi Ya Mosadi in concert and the memorable one is when I did Makhadzi at a festive opener in Serowe. She really took me high and many people recognised my talent after that. I also did magic bald installation, which trended the whole country,” she said. Speaking of the challenges she faces in her beauty career, she indicated that there were too many, especial dealing with clients who are new on doing make-up as they like complaining that prices were higher.

She said she was not expensive saying that her prices are reasonable. “In the next few years I want to see myself working with big companies like Btv and having my own make-up school. My advice to other artists is that they should take their work serious. Be clean, make your clients trust you and stop disappointments where unnecessary,” she ended.
