Latty switches to Amapiano

CORRESPONDENT

Musical creative, Leatile ‘Latty’ Motlhalamme has released an Amapiano debut single titled Ngiyekeleni. It is already making airwaves both locally and internationally. The tune is one of the songs from his upcoming album, Gabz City’s Boyfriend to be released in the foreseeable future.

The single, which features South African natives Mgiftoz SA and Nomsi_B has already been tipped to be a festive hit that will keep revellers on their feet. It has been getting airplay in countries such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Spain and the United States of America since its release.

The hit track came as a surprise to many since the musician has always been known as a Hip Hop artist. The move has left his followers wondering if he has ditched rap music like his South African counterparts such as Reason and Casper Nyovest who have now caught the Amapiano wave.

“I have always been an Amapiano fan since its inception. It’s not a secret that I have been always been a rapper. But as a creative, I am bound to experiment with any sound that I would relate to. Life works in season. I would like to believe that this particular juncture in my music career has led me to this path.

The switch to Amapiano music was inspired by the fast-growing Amapiano music genre, which is not just a music genre but also a culture. The culture involves fashion, lingo, dance and basic lifestyle in general…I fell in love with the culture and I grew to appreciate it even more because it is an original African genre, which resonates with me because I love originality and authenticity,” said Latty.

The single comes a month after BBC 1Xtra released the first ever Amapiano documentary titled ‘This is Amapiano’. The documentary takes us through the genre through the eyes of those who popularised it. Filmed in South Africa, viewers can see how the genre has soared on home soil and then track how it has taken off worldwide.

Speaking about his upcoming album, Latty stated that he has worked with several local and international artists and he is hoping to work with Amapiano gurus such as DJ Maphorisa, Kabza De Small and Sha Sha to name but a few.
