Sese shootings: What really transpired?

The male cop did not shoot himself dead—allegations

While some sources claim that a police officer who shot and killed his female colleague at Sese recently was shot by someone else, the police are adamant that he indeed turned the gun on himself.

On September 16 the police reported that constable Onneile Molapong, who was on a trip at Sese Veterinary Gate, was murdered by constable Baleseng Jupiter Moroke who in the process also shot and injured another 56-yearold officer before turning the service rifle on himself.

On the fateful evening, it is alleged that the Ramokgwebana native stationed at the Special Support Group (SSG) Gaborone who was on a trip at Matshwiri base camp in the CKGR, stole a service car, drove to Sese Veterinary Gate where upon arrival fatally shot Molapong, his ‘girlfriend’ multiple times.

Alarmed by the multiple gunshots, the on-duty 56-year-old Sergeant reportedly tried to intervene but was also shot and wounded by the angry officer.

In the wake of the shootings, the police released

a media statement in which the Botswana Police Service Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner Dipheko Motube revealed the police were investigating an incident

in which a police officer fatally shot his colleagues at Sese Veterinary Gate near Serule village before turning the gun on himself.

Motube further stated that the 34-year-old male constable from Ramokgwebana village shot dead a counterpart aged 36 from Bokaa village before shooting and wounding a 56-yearold male police Sergeant of Tatisiding village using a service rifle. Additionally, Motube said the officer later turned the gun on himself.

Contrary to these police reports, Mmegi is reliably informed that Moroke did not shoot himself dead as he was shot by another SSG officer who was in the company of the Sergeant officer inside the car.

It is alleged that Moroke started shooting the duo’s car when approaching in an effort to intervene and rescue the female officer and in the process shot and injured the Sergeant officer.

Mmegi is reliably informed that in self-defence, another officer who was accompanying the Sergeant officer shot Moroke dead. Quizzed about these allegations, Motube said investigations into the matter are still ongoing to establish what really transpired to motivate the shootings that fateful night.

“Currently, we do not know what really transpired that fateful night. A team of investigating officers is working round the clock to establish what really happened and we will share the outcome of the report with the media.

We still stand by our initial media release, there is nothing new,” Motube said.
