‘Grandma killer’ was not insane

He repeatedly hit his grandmother on the head

SHARON MATHALA Staff Writer

A31-year-old Lobatse man who pleaded insanity after butchering his grandmother has been declared fit by a psychologist. The man, Bakang Mothibi killed his grandmother, Kedidimetswe Mothibi back in May in the most gruesome way. Mothibi butchered his grandmother with an iron rod busting open her skull after she allegedly refused to give him money. After a dramatic police search that had Woodhall at a standstill, the man was finally arrested. Mothibi initially denied killing his grandmother blaming his deaf uncle.

On the day of the brutal incident, the deceased had called the police to report her grandson for harassment.

The police, however, took a while to arrive at her home. When they finally did, he had repeatedly hit her with the iron rod on her head, splashing the living room hall way with her blood and brain membranes.

Later on, Mothibi confessed to have taken a lot of alcohol, cannabis and cocaine and that he was hallucinating all the while he killed his grandmother.

During his arraignment, Lobatse Magistrate Gofaone Morweng ordered that Mothibi be taken for psychic evaluation. In court this week, a report was filed which proved that Mothibi was and is a sane person.

The report determined that he showed no signs of psychosis. The report found that his clinical history is only based on excessive use of marijuana.

“His clinical history does not suggest that he was under the influence of alcohol or marijuana or any other psychoactive substance at the time of the above alleged offence.” The report further found that, “his intellectual function are within normal limits.

He can understand court proceedings. It should be noted that he may likely present symptoms suggesting mental illness to evade legal action,” further reads the report. In the end, the court ruled Mothibi is mentally fit to stand trial for the gruesome murder of his grandmother.
