Badminton’s woes far from over

Naledi Lemogang

As tension continues to grip the local badminton management, Botswana Badminton Association executive have this week met with the Botswana National Sports Council for intervention. It has however now emerged that their outgoing president, Moses Macheke failed to show up. BBA is blaming their former president for mismanagement of the association’s funds. BBA spokesperson, Thobo Tshosa told this publication that their president resigned because he failed to account to all the funds the association received from the sponsorships, tournaments and Botswana National Sport Commission ( BNSC). The association claims that all the money that they have been receiving from the sponsors and BNSC was credited to his account and was used only with his authorization.

In an interview with BG SPORT this week, Tshosa said that their meeting with the BNSC went well as they managed to share their side of events.

“BNSC wanted to know details surrounding the president’s resignation; Macheke was supposed to be there, but he did not show up but we managed to state our story and we believe there will be progress, we are ready to work and achieve our mandate,” he said. On the other hand, in his resignation letter, former president, Moses Macheke cited his reasons as unprofessional behavior and immature habits by members of the Executive Committee. He said they compromise confidentiality, sabotage him and block progress made by other executive committee members. Furthermore, BBA affiliates demanded for an emergency Special General Meeting, following the resignation of their president and the suspension of all badminton events, however, Tshosa said that they are tasked to call an AGM instead of an SGM due to lack funds.

On the letter, dated 12 May 2023 that

BBA affiliates wrote to the association, they specified that the purpose of the meeting is to discuss several incidents that have been unfolding in the past
