Sefako Choristers announce their presence
BG REPORTER
A new choir has entered the growing Botswana chorale market. The choir is none other than Sefako Choristers, a group comprising of 75 members. Led by Kole Kole as chairperson, the choir is set on changing the chorale landscape in Botswana. Conceptualised by a group of friends, the friends who are passionate about chorale music could have easily joined one of the many chorale groups locally. But instead opted to create something that they hope will showcase a different type of chorale music to avid chorale lovers.
Directed by Lazarus Segatlhe, this coming April 29th, Sefako will officially be launched to the market. The event will be held at Mantlwaneng Theatre, Westwood. Tickets are P150 ( general), and P300 ( VIP). The choir will be launched by none other than one of the giants in the chorale industry namely, Andante Choristers. Speaking in an interview with this publication, Secretary of Sefako, Teko Mpywe explains that the group was established in 2018, but was only registered as a society in 2021. Last year, the group participated at the annual National Arts Competition under the Large Category where they came fifth out of eight choirs. “Our intention is to present something different to what we have currently in the market,” he explains. He further says that they are looking at fusing chorale and contemporary music to see what will come up. He further notes that the group wants to create a platform where members can earn a living from their passion. Currently, they have four members who are currently undergoing training with the legendary Regie Kopi.
“Once done with training, we intend to see how we find a market for them,” he points out.
The group comprises majority of youth who are either unemployed or at tertiary. The group has a base in Gaborone, with rehearsals taking place at GSS.
