Mascom Derby 2023 cancelled
The news of the cancellation of the much- awaited Mascom Derby 2023 has left many horse- racing enthusiasts disappointed across the country. After all, the Mascom Derby has been an iconic event in Botswana for 14 years, attracting thousands of visitors to the northern tourist village of Maun to witness the glitz and glamour of sports, style fashion and entertainment. But, unfortunately, the 2023 edition of the race will not take place as planned due to legal issues.
According to a press statement from Mascom this week, the theme for this year’s event was “More Than Just a Race”, and Mascom had partnered with the local horse racing umbrella body being the Botswana Horse Owners Association ( BHRA) to host the event at the Maun Samedupe ( MA- SA) Racing Park. The move to appoint a new technical partner was aimed at bringing in fresh perspectives and expertise to the event.
However, the High Court issued an interdict on March 3rd, preventing Mascom from hosting the event on April 8th, 2023, or any similar event until a substantive decision is made on the case between Mascom and their former technical partner. As a result, the 2023 Mascom Derby has been cancelled. Despite the setback, Mascom says it remains committed to being a leader in the community and supports local tourism, businesses, fashion and textile industries, and charitable organizations in the Maun area. Through the press statement, Mascom indicated that the cancellation of the event is a temporary setback, and the wireless telecommunication will continue to play a role in the development of horse- racing in Botswana.
